PMC’s Green Revolution: Farmers’ Markets to Bloom at 75 New Locations in Pune

In an effort to address traffic congestion concerns and streamline the distribution of fresh produce, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unveiled a plan to revamp its farmers’ markets. The proposed strategy involves the closure of existing markets and the establishment of approximately 75 new markets across the city, according to announcements made by civic officials on Tuesday.

The decision stems from resident complaints, particularly in areas like Katraj-Ambegaon and Bopodi, highlighting issues related to traffic and parking disruptions caused by the markets. Additionally, concerns were raised about non-farming vendors participating in these markets.

Under the newly devised plan, PMC will collaborate with the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board to establish two farmers’ markets in each ward. These markets will convene once a week on strategically identified lands, chosen by the PMC estate department, to ensure minimal disruption to traffic flow.

In a bid to support local farmers, agricultural companies will be permitted to set up stalls at these markets, facilitating the direct sale of produce. Stall operators will be required to submit a ₹100 deposit and pay ₹50 as rent. Each market is anticipated to feature 30-40 stalls, exclusively dedicated to farmers.

This innovative system aims to facilitate easier access for residents to purchase fresh produce directly from farmers while concurrently addressing traffic congestion issues within the city.
