PMC Takes Innovative Step to Combat Air Pollution: Introduces Mist-Based Fountains at Main Chowks

Pune, August 11, 2023: In a proactive move to address the persistent issue of air pollution, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a significant step by installing 10 mist-based fountains at main chowks across the city on a trial basis. The inauguration of this innovative initiative took place under the National Clean Air Program, with Guardian Minister of Pune, Chandrakant Patil, leading the event. The occasion also saw the distribution of subsidies for electric passenger rickshaws, further promoting sustainable transportation solutions.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Vikram Kumar, Pune Municipal Commissioner; Ravindra Binwade, Additional Municipal Commissioner; Vikas Dhakane; Nitin Shinde of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board; Jitendra Purohit of Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI); Rajendra Muthe, Special Task Officer of Guardian Minister; and Madhav Jagtap, Deputy Commissioner of the Environment Department.

Speaking at the event, Chandrakant Patil emphasized the significance of transitioning to electric rickshaws as a means to not only increase income for rickshaw drivers but also to significantly reduce pollution levels in the city. Patil highlighted the available subsidies for electric rickshaws, making the transition economically viable for rickshaw drivers. He also urged the municipal corporation to consider establishing electric charging stations near rickshaw stands, further facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles.

Discussing the reduction of pollution in the city, Patil drew attention to the mist-based fountains installed in the city squares. These fountains are anticipated to mitigate dust in the air, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for Pune’s residents.

Vikas Dhakane, Additional Commissioner of PMC, underlined the challenge posed by the city’s increasing population, which has reached 70 lakh, with 55 lakh registered vehicles. The growing number of vehicles from outside the city has contributed to escalating pollution levels. The PMC’s approach to tackling this issue encompasses various measures, including the subsidy provision for e-rickshaws, the introduction of e-buses, and the establishment of mist-based fountains.

Madhav Jagtap, PMC’s Environment Officer, revealed that the Municipal Corporation has received funds amounting to Rs 350 crores from the National Clean Air Program and the 15th Finance Commission through the Central Government. These funds are being utilized to support the initiative, including the distribution of subsidies of Rs. 25 thousand per electric passenger auto rickshaw owner. Mist-based fountains are being strategically placed at 10 major squares across the city, with plans to expand the initiative to 40 locations in total.

The event witnessed the participation of electric auto rickshaw manufacturing companies, representatives from rickshaw associations, and rickshaw owners, collectively showcasing the city’s commitment to innovative solutions for a cleaner, greener future.
