PMC Cracks Down on Bulk Waste Generators in Pune, Mandates Inspection for Wet Waste Disposal Compliance

In a bid to enforce proper waste disposal practices, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed all ward offices to conduct immediate inspections of bulk waste generators. The focus of these inspections is to ensure compliance with the wet waste disposal system, particularly for establishments generating 100 kg of waste per day.

According to PMC’s instructions, any entity falling under the category of bulk waste generators, including houses, hospitals, schools, hotels, government offices, and commercial establishments, must dispose of 100 kg of waste daily on their premises through composting or other approved methods.

A comprehensive list of bulk waste generators, encompassing hospitals, hotels, colleges, societies, and various establishments, has been provided to all PMC Assistant Commissioners for reference.

While the PMC has previously informed ward offices about the implementation of the wet waste disposal system, the recent directive highlights a lack of effective penal action against non-compliant bulk waste generators. The PMC faces an unnecessary burden in managing the wet waste of establishments that do not operate functional disposal systems.

To address this issue, the PMC has instructed ward offices to conduct direct inspections of all bulk waste generators within their jurisdiction. If the wet waste disposal systems are found to be non-operational, penal action will be taken against the establishments in violation of the guidelines.

The PMC has set a deadline of 7 days for ward offices to complete inspections of all bulk waste generators under their jurisdiction. The inspections will be carried out by health inspectors and senior health inspectors to ensure that biodegradable waste is appropriately disposed of through composting on the premises of the bulk waste generators.
