Pedestrian Perils: Pune Grapples with Deteriorating Footpaths

Residents Demand Urgent Action as Broken Walkways Endanger Safety

Despite Pune’s reputation for rapid infrastructural growth, residents are grappling with a persistent problem: broken and uneven footpaths. Complaints abound as residents navigate their daily lives amidst incomplete or deteriorating walkways, facing inconvenience and safety hazards at every turn. The situation has reached a critical juncture, prompting residents to demand immediate attention from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The deteriorating state of footpaths poses a significant risk to pedestrian safety, with uneven surfaces and missing portions making navigation treacherous, particularly for those with disabilities. Cracks, potholes, and debris further exacerbate the issue, turning routine walks into hazardous undertakings. Monica Sharma, a resident of Kalyani Nagar, vividly describes the challenges faced daily, citing poorly lit pathways, puddles, and accumulating garbage as persistent concerns.

Suhas Mohan, a resident of Bavdhan, highlights the broader implications of neglected footpaths, including waterlogging and the proliferation of vector-borne diseases due to stagnant water. Yuvraj Kale of Lohegaon echoes these sentiments, emphasizing the inherent dangers posed by broken pathways, especially during adverse weather conditions.

Despite numerous complaints lodged with the PMC, residents lament the lack of tangible solutions, with responses offering vague assurances of impending action. Sahebrao Dandge, superintendent engineer at PMC, acknowledges the challenges faced, attributing some damages to excavation work for utility installations. However, he assures residents that repair and maintenance activities will commence promptly, with punitive measures in place for deliberate damage to public property.

As Pune residents continue to grapple with unsafe footpaths, the onus falls on the PMC to prioritize maintenance and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
