PCMC Cracks Down on Illegal RMC Plants: 11 Units Shut Down for Pollution Violations

Environment Department Takes Swift Action Against Unpermitted Operations in PCMC Jurisdiction

The environment department of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated stringent measures against unauthorized ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants, closing down 11 such establishments operating without necessary permissions from the civic body and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). These plants, found to be flouting pollution regulations, were identified across Tathawade, Punawale, Kiwale, and Moshi within the PCMC jurisdiction.

The action, taken last week, follows numerous complaints from residents regarding air and noise pollution attributed to these illegal operations. Upon investigation, officials discovered that the plants had been functioning clandestinely for an extended period without proper authorization from PCMC or MPCB.

According to a senior PCMC official, complaints lodged through the SARATHI portal and written submissions prompted thorough inspections by the environmental department’s enforcement squad, leading to the revelation of unauthorized activities.

Sanjay Kulkarni, head of the Environment Department at PCMC, highlighted the gross violations of pollution norms observed in these unlicensed RMC plants. He emphasized the detrimental impact on public health due to unchecked air pollution generated by these facilities.

“We have informed the MPCB about these illegal operations and are strictly enforcing regulatory provisions outlined in section 376 A of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act 1949,” stated Kulkarni. “These plants cannot resume operations until they comply with environmental regulations and obtain requisite permissions from the authorities.”

Ravindra Andhale, regional officer at MPCB Pune, affirmed ongoing efforts to curb illegal operations in the region, particularly targeting RMC plants and stone crushing plants (SCPs). He reiterated the MPCB’s commitment to conducting thorough inspections and enforcing pollution control norms to safeguard public health and environmental integrity.
