PCDA Pune Observes National Unity Day, Pays Tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Indira Gandhi

Pune, 2nd November 2023: On the 31st of October, 2023, Pune marked two significant events: the Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the “Iron Man of India,” and the Assassination of former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi, referred to as the “Iron Lady of India.”

The Defence Accounts Department annually observes this day as National Unity Day or “Rashtriya Ekta Divas” and Anti-Terrorism Day. The commemoration took place in the Central Hall of the Main Office, with officials and staff of PCDA(Army) Pune, along with 109 sub-offices, participating physically and through video conferencing.

Dr. Rajeev Chavan, IDAS, ndc, PCDA(Army) Pune, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, with the event hosted by Suhana Arief, AAO. The gathering included notable figures such as Vikram Rajapure, DCDA, S.R. Boid, IDAS, DCDA, Swapnil Hanmane, IDAS, ACDA, R.K. Bindroo, IDAS, ACDA, Sh. Venkat Rao, IDAS, ACDA, Vaishali D’souza, IDAS, ACDA, Ravi Kumar, SAO, K.P. Singh, SAO, and all other officers and staff of PCDA(Army) Pune.

The inauguration witnessed the reading of the Pledge (Oath) of ‘Unity’ and ‘Anti-Terrorism’ in Hindi by Smt. Madhu Gandhi, SAO, followed by the English version read by Smt. Suhana Arief, AAO. Officials solemnly pledged to preserve the unity, integrity, and security of the nation, committing to combat all ill-will for the nation’s flourishing.

The Chief Guest paid floral tributes to iconic historical figures and emphasized the importance of the annual celebration. He highlighted how it raises awareness among the youth and provides an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the nation’s integral strength. Reflecting on the sacrifices of leaders like Sardar Patel and the challenges faced post-independence, he stressed the significance of national unity in overcoming threats.

Acknowledging the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as a form of terrorism, the Chief Guest urged every citizen to contribute to the nation’s well-being. He cautioned against becoming a nation like Pakistan, struggling with terrorism and prosperity.

The event concluded with applause and special thanks extended to Dr. Rajeev Chavan, IDAS, ndc, PCDA(Army) Pune, for his participation.
