NSUI Urges SPPU to Address Student Grievances; Threatens Protest

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has issued a stern warning to the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), urging immediate action on a range of unresolved issues. In a letter addressed to the university administration, NSUI highlighted concerns including withdrawal of cases against students, reservation in professor recruitment, scholarship accessibility, and fee hikes for the upcoming academic year. Failure to address these grievances could lead to escalated protests, NSUI representatives have cautioned.

Akshay Kamble, a spokesperson for NSUI, underscored the urgency of addressing these concerns. “We demand the withdrawal of false cases against students who engaged with Senate members. Additionally, implementing Maratha reservation in professor recruitment, easing scholarship terms, and halting fee hikes for 2024-25 are crucial steps towards fostering an inclusive and equitable academic environment,” Kamble stated.

The NSUI’s demands echo broader calls for social justice and student welfare within the university community. Despite previous discussions with university officials, tangible action has yet to be taken, leaving students disillusioned and frustrated.

Outlined in the letter are specific demands:

  1. Immediate withdrawal of false cases filed against students and union representatives.
  2. Implementation of 10 percent reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) in professor recruitment.
  3. Removal of oppressive terms and conditions in university scholarship schemes.
  4. Cancellation of fee hikes scheduled for the academic year 2024-25.

If these demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe, NSUI has announced plans for a Dharna protest on March 23, to be staged in front of the university’s main building.
