New Speed Limits Set For Mumbai-Pune Expressway

In a bid to enhance safety and efficiency on the bustling Mumbai-Pune Expressway, significant changes to speed limits have been announced by the Maharashtra Traffic Police, marking a pivotal development in the management of one of India’s busiest roadways.

Notice Issued by Maharashtra Traffic Police:

  • Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Maharashtra, Sukhwinder Singh, has issued a notice detailing the revised speed limits for vehicles traversing the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, popularly known as the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
  • The decision to revise speed limits comes following a comprehensive survey conducted by a team of experts, aimed at optimizing safety and traffic flow on the expressway.

Revised Speed Limits:

  • The new speed limits will be applicable across the entire 94-kilometer stretch of the expressway, encompassing both flat areas and challenging ghat sections.
  • Speed limits vary according to vehicle categories, with adjustments made to ensure safety and efficiency.

Key Highlights of Revised Speed Limits:

  • Vehicles falling under the M-1 category, including those with up to eight passengers including the driver, will have a speed limit of 100 km per hour on flat areas and 60 km per hour in ghat sections.
  • Passenger vehicles carrying nine or more passengers (M-2 and M-3 category vehicles) will adhere to a speed limit of 80 km per hour on flat areas and 40 km per hour in ghat sections.
  • Goods vehicles (all N categories) are subject to a speed limit of 80 km per hour on flat areas and 40 km per hour in ghat sections.

Ensuring Compliance:

  • To enforce these new speed limits effectively, speed cameras will be strategically installed along the expressway, allowing authorities to monitor and penalize violations.
  • The decision to install speed cameras follows extensive consultations and joint discussions involving various stakeholders, including State Highway Police, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and IRB Infra Development.

Objective and Impact:

  • The implementation of revised speed limits aims to enhance safety on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, particularly in challenging ghat sections where lower speeds are crucial for vehicle control.
  • By adjusting speed limits based on different vehicle categories and road conditions, authorities aim to minimize accidents and ensure smoother traffic flow on this vital roadway, benefiting commuters and cargo transport alike.

The introduction of these revised speed limits underscores a proactive approach by authorities to prioritize safety and efficiency on one of India’s most vital expressways, setting a precedent for effective traffic management strategies in the region.
