MPCB Takes Strict Action Against Air Pollution Violations: Closure Notices Issued to Stone Crushing Units in Pune

In response to the escalating air pollution crisis in Pune, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has launched a comprehensive drive against ready mix concrete and stone crushing plants. The initiative, which began earlier this week, specifically targets areas like Maval and Hinjewadi, where 34 units, comprising 18 stone crushing plants and 16 ready mix concrete plants, have been subjected to rigorous inspections.

Crucial Measures Taken by MPCB:

  1. Closure Notices: MPCB has issued closure notices to four stone-crushing units found violating air pollution regulations.
  2. Show Cause Notices: Six stone crushing plants have been issued show cause notices, while proposed directions have been submitted for eight other plants.
  3. Upcoming Action: In the following week, MPCB officials plan to take action against 16 ready mix concrete plants located in Hinjewadi.

Inspections Based on Resident Complaints:

V V Killedar, sub-regional officer, MPCB Pune, revealed that inspections were initiated in response to resident complaints in priority areas like Maval and Hinjewadi. The scrutiny will extend to Bavadi, Wagholi, and Lonikand in the coming week, covering all relevant plants across the district.

Violations Uncovered During Inspections:

The inspections exposed several violations by stone crushing plants, including the absence of sprinklers, dust collectors, internal tar roads, and proper tire washing facilities for transporting vehicles. These infractions contribute to the emission of dust, resulting in substantial air pollution.

Legal Basis for Action:

Ravi Andhale, regional officer of MPCB, Pune, clarified that the actions were taken under the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, and the EP Act, 1986. Plants are mandated to adhere to emission standards for carcinogenic PM2.5 and PM10, failing which stern action will be taken against them.

The MPCB’s proactive stance aims to address environmental concerns and protect the well-being of Pune’s residents, emphasizing the need for adherence to pollution control regulations.
