After a delayed onset, the monsoon’s withdrawal from Maharashtra, including Pune, has also been postponed. The southwest monsoon, which brought welcome rains to the region, is now set to bid adieu in the next two days, according to Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather Forecasting at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The delayed withdrawal of the monsoon can be attributed to consecutive low-pressure systems forming over the Bay of Bengal, resulting in recent showers for the city and surrounding areas. While the delay has been an unexpected blessing for regions that received less rainfall than anticipated during the monsoon, the conditions have now become favorable for its withdrawal.
Kashyapi noted that the monsoon is expected to begin its retreat from north Maharashtra starting today. Over the next 2-3 days, Marathwada and Vidharbha will witness the withdrawal, followed by Pune and Mumbai bidding farewell to the monsoon within the next 48-72 hours. Overall, the monsoon is anticipated to withdraw from Maharashtra by October 10-11.
The southwest monsoon concludes with a 6 percent deficit, with only 3 out of 36 meteorological subdivisions receiving excess rainfall. Seven subdivisions faced a rainfall deficit, while the remainder of the country experienced normal rainfall.
At present, Maharashtra is not experiencing any major weather events, and the chances of rainfall across the state are nil. This news comes as a relief to farmers who are currently in the midst of the harvest season. Most crops are in the harvest stage, and this marks the first time in the season that rainfall is not anticipated. Overall, the monsoon season in Maharashtra has been characterized as normal, except for certain districts reporting significant rainfall deficiencies.
