Monsoon Resurgence: Pune Braces for Heavy Rainfall from June 22

Pune is poised for a significant resurgence in monsoon activity starting June 22, following a brief lull in rainfall. The Arabian branch of the southwest monsoon is set to regain strength, promising heavy showers across the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), above-normal rainfall is forecasted for Pune throughout June.

Anticipated Rainfall Patterns

“We expect a notable increase in rainfall starting June 23, particularly in the ghat areas, with substantial showers anticipated in Pune from June 25,” remarked KS Hosalikar, head of Climate Research and Services at IMD Pune.

The IMD’s predictions extend to favorable conditions for good rainfall across Konkan, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada regions starting June 22.

Regional Rainfall Trends

Maharashtra has already experienced normal-category rainfall, recording 105 mm from June 1 to June 18, slightly exceeding the expected 102.3 mm for this period.

“Marathwada and Central Maharashtra have seen significant rainfall, exceeding expectations, while Konkan and Vidarbha are facing some rainfall deficiencies,” highlighted IMD officials.

Impact and Preparedness

The pre-monsoon and early monsoon showers have brought relief, particularly to Central Maharashtra and Marathwada, which received moderate to heavy rainfall between June 1 and June 15. Marathwada, in particular, has seen substantial rainfall with a 63% surplus compared to normal levels.

Central Maharashtra, encompassing Pune district, reported rainfall 31% above normal during this period.

Current Alerts and Future Outlook

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pune city from June 19 to 22, predicting light to moderate rainfall within the city and moderate showers in isolated ghat areas.

Regarding climatic influences, KS Hosalikar confirmed the dissipation of El Nino, which previously contributed to severe heat earlier in the year. However, La Nina conditions expected by late July or early August in the Pacific Ocean could potentially enhance this year’s monsoon season.

As Pune prepares for an uptick in rainfall, both residents and authorities are gearing up for the anticipated weather changes and their potential implications for the region. With forecasts pointing towards increased monsoon activity, Pune looks forward to replenishing its water reservoirs and agricultural lands, marking a significant turn in this year’s weather patterns.
