Monsoon Precautions: Varandha Ghat Traffic Halted to Prevent Disasters

Varandha Ghat Road

In a precautionary measure to ensure safety during the monsoon season, Varandha Ghat has been closed to all traffic from today until 31st August 2024. This decision aims to prevent potential incidents such as landslides, fallen trees, road collapses, and mudslides that are common during heavy rainfall in the region.

Reason for Closure

The closure follows the issuance of red and orange alerts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), signaling heavy rainfall in the ghats. Recent incidents, including a road and protective wall collapse near Waghjai Mata Mandir in Varandha Ghat, have heightened concerns about safety. To mitigate further risks, Pune District Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase has ordered the suspension of traffic on the Varandha Ghat route to Mahad (Raigad) via Bhor.

Safety Concerns

Varandha Ghat’s winding roads are especially susceptible to natural hazards during the monsoon season. Sudden landslides, tree collapses, erosion, and mudslides pose significant risks to both life and property. The closure is a proactive step to avoid any tragic incidents and ensure the safety of travelers.

Alternative Routes

Travelers heading to Mahad and Konkan are advised to use alternative routes such as Tamhini Ghat and Ambenali Ghat during this period. These routes are expected to be safer and more reliable under the current weather conditions.

Broader Precautionary Measures

Throughout Maharashtra, including Pune, authorities are taking extensive precautions to prevent rain-related disasters. Annual efforts are made to ensure the safety and convenience of citizens during the monsoon season. In addition to Varandha Ghat, other hazardous tourist spots near Pune will be evaluated for potential closures to safeguard public well-being.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and follow official advisories to navigate safely during the monsoon season.
