MIT World Peace University Sparks Controversy: Award for Kashmiri Journalist Safina Nabi Rescinded

Pune: MIT World Peace University’s decision to revoke the Journalism for Peace Award initially conferred upon Kashmiri journalist Safina Nabi has ignited a debate on potential political influence and the freedom of expression. The university attributed the reversal to a “communication error,” raising questions about the motivations behind the cancellation.

The 5th National Conference on Media and Journalism, organized by the School of Media and Communication at MIT World Peace University, unfolded today with grandeur. This event was designed to honor three outstanding journalists with the ‘Journalism of Peace Award,’ a prestigious accolade accompanied by a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a commemorative memento, and a certificate.

Safina Nabi was initially announced as one of the recipients of this distinguished award, only to have her honor revoked on the eve of the ceremony. The revelation of this abrupt change in plan was first reported by the news outlet ‘The Wire.’ Meanwhile, the other two journalists were presented with their awards as scheduled on Wednesday.

In an official statement, MIT World Peace University sought to clarify its position, stating, “MIT World Peace University is an institution committed to transparency, impartiality, and political neutrality. Regrettably, this situation arose due to internal discord. We hold Safina Nabi’s journalistic contributions in high regard, and it is under consideration to duly honor her in a forthcoming prominent award ceremony.”
