Milestone in Justice: May 10 Verdict Nears in Dr. Dabholkar Assassination Case

Pune, Maharashtra: After nearly a decade of legal proceedings, the long-awaited verdict in the murder case of prominent activist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar is anticipated to be delivered on May 10, 2024.

Dr. Dabholkar, a vocal advocate against superstition and irrational beliefs, was tragically gunned down during his routine morning walk on August 20, 2013, on the Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde bridge in Pune. His assassination sent shockwaves across the nation, igniting widespread outrage and calls for justice. Initially handled by the Pune Police, the investigation was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in June 2014, following a directive from the Bombay High Court. Subsequently, the CBI arrested and charged five individuals allegedly involved in the heinous crime.

The accused include Virendrasinh Tawde, an ENT surgeon purportedly linked to the Sanatan Sanstha, as well as Sachin Andure and Sharad Kalaskar, identified by the CBI as the assailants. Additionally, advocate Sanjiv Punalekar and his assistant Vikram Bhave were implicated as accomplices in the murder.

The trial, spanning over eight years, has navigated numerous legal intricacies and procedural complexities. From the initial framing of charges to the examination of witnesses, the judicial process has been protracted and intricate. Notably, recent proceedings witnessed the special court, presided over by Judge P.P. Jadhav, reserving its verdict following extensive arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.

Special Public Prosecutor Prakash Suryawanshi confirmed that the judgement is slated to be pronounced on May 10, marking a pivotal moment in the quest for justice for Dr. Dabholkar.

Despite challenges, including shifts in judges and legal representation, the prosecution has steadfastly pursued the case, presenting compelling evidence before the court and invoking pertinent legal provisions, including sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). While Tawde, Andure, and Kalaskar remain in custody, Punalekar and Bhave have been granted bail.

As the verdict date approaches, anticipation mounts among the public, yearning for closure and accountability in the aftermath of Dr. Dabholkar’s tragic demise. The outcome of the trial is poised to resonate far beyond the courtroom, serving as a testament to the enduring pursuit of justice and the unwavering resolve of those committed to upholding the principles Dr. Dabholkar tirelessly championed throughout his life.
