Mid-Air Scare: Emergency Door Cover Detaches on Delhi to Pune SpiceJet Flight

Pune, 6th November 2023: In a harrowing incident, passengers on board SpiceJet flight SG938 from Delhi to Pune, which occurred on the 5th of November, were thrust into a state of shock and concern as a portion of the emergency door cover became dislodged mid-air.

Mehab Qureshi, one of the passengers on the flight, recounted the unsettling experience, saying, “The passenger seated by the window and I exchanged alarmed glances. We promptly informed the cabin crew about the incident, but their response seemed disappointingly nonchalant. The cabin crew simply advised us, ‘There is nothing to worry about, just avoid touching it!'”

Qureshi continued, “While I may not be well-versed in aeronautics, throughout the entirety of our flight, fear and apprehension consumed us. Despite our fear, we chose not to alarm the other passengers.”

The perceived lack of urgency and seriousness in the cabin crew’s response exacerbated the anxiety and unease among passengers who were seeking reassurance and anticipated a more diligent approach to address the safety lapse. This incident has raised legitimate questions regarding the airline’s safety protocols and its commitment to passenger safety.

In response, a SpiceJet spokesperson stated, “The emergency door remained completely secure. A qualified engineer confirmed this post-flight. Only the cover on the door assist strap had become dislodged from its position. The door was firmly locked, as is the case on any other flight, and could not have opened by itself. The cover is, in any case, removable. It was repositioned after the flight landed in Pune.”

While SpiceJet assured that the aircraft’s safety was not compromised, this incident has ignited a discourse surrounding emergency procedures and passenger safety concerns during air travel.
