Medical Marvel: Pune’s Sassoon Hospital Removes Giant Thyroid Tumor in Complex Surgery

Pune: Sassoon Hospital’s Remarkable Surgical Feat – Removing a 1.5 Kg Thyroid Tumor

In an extraordinary medical achievement, a team of doctors at Pune’s state-government-run Sassoon Hospital successfully performed surgery to remove a massive 1.5 kg thyroid tumor from patient Sanjeev Kumar, hailing from Bihar. Kumar’s arduous journey took him to various hospitals over 15 years, but he was turned away by renowned institutions in Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune.

The colossal thyroid tumor had drastically impacted Kumar’s quality of life. His breathing was hindered, and his voice underwent significant changes due to the sheer weight of the tumor on his neck.

This groundbreaking surgery was orchestrated by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Sonawale, Head of the ENT Department at Sassoon Hospital, and his adept team, which included Dr. Akriti Nimani, Dr. Rupakita Sarkar, Dr. Nimita Dubey, Dr. Praneet Khandagale, Dr. Madhav Konke, Dr. Priyanka Shinde, Dr. Sheryl Joseph, and Dr. Sherap Bhutia.

The invaluable contributions of Dr. Sunita Khade, an anesthesiologist, and her proficient team were pivotal in ensuring a successful procedure. Nurses Juhi Pawar and Sharvari Gawde, along with assistants Gengje Mama and Tanaji Mama, provided essential support throughout the surgery.

Dr. Sonawale highlighted the advanced capabilities of the ENT department at Sassoon Hospital, boasting state-of-the-art equipment, including three modular operation theaters and cutting-edge surgical tools such as diode lasers, covlators, and micro dividers. The department specializes in endoscopic surgeries, eliminating the need for incisions in the ear and nose. Moreover, it has performed 22 cochlear implant surgeries for deaf children under the guidance of Dr. Sameer Joshi and utilizes a stroboscope for the examination of the voice box and vocal cords.

Dr. Sanjeev Thakur, the Dean of BJ Government Medical College and Sassoon Hospital, emphasized that Sassoon Hospital offers top-tier treatments and provides hope for children born with hearing loss or those who experience hearing loss within the first five years of life. With Sassoon Hospital’s care, these children can regain the ability to speak and hear effectively.

The hospital also conducts surgeries for various conditions, including cancer of the ear, nose, throat, larynx, and mouth, as well as addressing issues like trismus (difficulty in opening the mouth) caused by tobacco use.
