Market Yard, October 31, 2023: Pune’s prominent Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Market Yard, commonly referred to as ‘Market Yard,’ is all set to remain closed tomorrow as a mark of support for the ongoing Maratha reservation protests in the state of Maharashtra. The Maratha Kranti Morcha’s agitation has been gaining momentum across Maharashtra, leading to protests in various regions. In a show of solidarity with the cause, Market Yard will observe a day of closure.
Market Yard Traders and Workers Join the Bandh
Several traders and commission agents based in Pune’s Market Yard, located in the Gultekdi area, have collectively decided to suspend their trading activities on November 1, which falls on a Wednesday. This move is aimed at demonstrating their unequivocal support for the Maratha reservation movement. Additionally, the Market Yard Workers’ Union has rallied behind this decision and is actively calling for a day-long bandh on the same date.
These actions come in response to the widespread protests and disruptions triggered by the Maratha community’s persistent demand for reservation. Recent incidents have included the Maratha community’s protest against Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s inauguration of a sugar factory in Daund, the closure of Navle Bridge, and a ban on the entry of political leaders into certain cities. Moreover, MP and MLA visits have been canceled in response to warnings from the Maratha community.
Long-standing Demand for Maratha Reservation
The demand for Maratha reservation has been a protracted issue, with the government’s initial promise of a 30-day resolution period now surpassed by 47 days without concrete action. Notably, activist Manoj Jarange-Patil has been on a fast unto death at Antarvali Sarati in Jalna for the past seven days, underscoring the urgency and unwavering determination of the Maratha community in their call for reservation.
