March’s Cold Surprise: Pune Shivers as Mercury Drops to a Six-Year Low

Pune’s weather took a surprising turn as Shivajinagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature for March in the last six years, settling at 11.3 degrees Celsius, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This sudden drop in temperature, below the normal level by 3.5 degrees Celsius, has captured the attention of residents and meteorologists alike.

This unusual weather phenomenon can be attributed to the clear skies over the city, allowing the influence of northern cooler winds to make a significant impact in the Central Maharashtra region. The weather experts note that the south-southeasterly winds, typically flowing from the Bay of Bengal and bringing moisture, have weakened, contributing to the drop in temperature.

The recent temperature trend in Pune has been noteworthy. On March 4, the region experienced a significant temperature drop of 3 degrees, with Shivajinagar recording a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, there was a marginal increase, reaching 14 degrees for the next two days. However, in the past 24 hours, the temperature took another dip, reaching 11.3 degrees Celsius.

Comparing historical data, the last time Pune witnessed such a low temperature in March was on March 12, 2017, when it recorded 10.3 degrees Celsius. The current temperature has become the lowest in the last six years, emphasizing the unusual weather conditions.

Anupam Kashyapi, the head of the weather and forecasting division at IMD, Pune, explained, “The clear sky in the city facilitates the impact of northern cooler winds, while the weakened south-southeasterly winds reduce moisture influx, contributing to the temperature drop.”

The IMD forecasts that Pune is likely to experience similar weather conditions for the next 24 hours, with the temperature expected to remain at the current low level.
