Leadership Shift in Maharashtra Police: Amitesh Kumar Assumes Role of Pune Police Commissioner

Pune, India – In a major reshuffle within the Indian Police Service (IPS) in Maharashtra, Amitesh Kumar, the former commissioner of police in Nagpur, has taken charge as the new commissioner of police in Pune. The decision, made by the Maharashtra State Home Department, comes as part of a broader initiative involving approximately 50 police officers across the state, strategically timed in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Amitesh Kumar replaces Retesh Kumaarr, who has been transferred to the position of commandant general of Maharashtra Home Guard. Retesh Kumaarr, who assumed the role of Pune commissioner of police in December 2022, garnered attention for his proactive approach in tackling criminal gangs under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act.

As part of the reshuffle, Pravin Pawar, the former special inspector general of the Konkan range, will now serve as the joint police commissioner of the Pune city police. The appointment is expected to bring valuable experience and leadership to the city’s law enforcement.

In rural Pune, Ankit Goyal has been promoted to the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in Gadchiroli. Pankaj Deshmukh, assuming the role of Superintendent of Police for rural Pune, is tasked with maintaining law and order in the region.
