Recent heavy rainfall in Pune and its surrounding catchment areas has led to a significant rise in water levels across the dams that serve as vital water sources for the city. The Khadakwasla Dam, in particular, has reached an impressive 96% of its total capacity, prompting officials to prepare for the imminent discharge of excess water into the Mutha River.
Officials closely monitoring the situation have reported continuous rainfall in the catchment area of the Khadakwasla Dam. Should these weather conditions persist, the controlled release of water into the Mutha River is anticipated. In light of this, authorities have issued a cautionary advisory urging citizens to refrain from entering the river and to relocate their possessions, including animals, from the river basin. Additionally, residents residing in low-lying areas have been advised to stay informed about the evolving situation and take necessary precautions.
Comparatively, the water levels in the four dams within the Khadakwasla cluster currently stand at 96.85% (equivalent to 28.23 TMC), as opposed to the levels recorded on the same day last year, which were at 99.88% (29.12 TMC).
