Join the Decision-Making: Pune Residents Encouraged to Submit Budget Proposals by August 31

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has extended an invitation to citizens to actively engage in the decision-making process for budget allocation through its Citizens Participatory Budget initiative. This opportunity empowers residents to propose and suggest infrastructure-related projects within their localities, contributing to the development and enhancement of their communities. The call for suggestions is open until August 31, providing citizens ample time to submit their proposals through the official PMC website.

The inception of the participatory budget scheme by PMC dates back to 2006-07, reflecting the municipality’s commitment to involving its citizens in shaping their urban landscape. In the previous financial year (2022-23), PMC allocated a substantial sum of ₹40 crore towards the participatory budget, demonstrating the significance of this initiative in the local governance structure.

Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar has warmly welcomed citizens to put forward their suggestions for various infrastructure-related projects within their localities. This initiative aligns with the principles of democratic governance, allowing residents to voice their preferences and contribute to the development agenda of the city.

Under the participatory budget scheme, citizens are invited to propose projects that pertain to road improvements, footpath enhancements, public toilet installations, street lighting enhancements, and other infrastructure-related works. However, it is important to note that the PMC will not consider suggestions for projects involving pedestrian bridges and speed breakers.

Ulka Kalaskar, the head of PMC’s accounts department, highlighted the positive response that the initiative has garnered in previous years. The enthusiastic participation from residents in each ward aids the civic body in making informed decisions and earmarking budgetary allocations for the suggested projects. This symbiotic collaboration between the administration and the citizens fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, driving the holistic development of the city.

As Pune residents seize this opportunity to actively participate in the budget allocation process, the participatory budget initiative continues to pave the way for inclusive and people-centric urban development.
