India’s First “Pilot Cactus Park” Launched to Promote Cactus as Green Gold Crop

Urulikanchan, Pune – A groundbreaking initiative aimed at harnessing the potential of cactus as a versatile and sustainable crop has been launched with the inauguration of India’s first “Pilot Cactus Park.” The inauguration ceremony, presided over by Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Giriraj Singh, marks a significant milestone in promoting cactus-based products for various industries.

Located at the Bharatiya Agro Industries Foundation (BAIF) central research station in Urulikanchan near Pune, the “Pilot Cactus Park” is envisioned as a hub for research, development, and promotion of cactus cultivation and its diverse applications.

Accompanying the inauguration of the Cactus Park, Department of Land Resources secretary Manoj Joshi inaugurated a cactus-based vegan leather plant, further underscoring the multifaceted utility of this resilient plant.

In his address during the inauguration ceremony, Minister Giriraj Singh emphasized the importance of cactus as a future crop for India. He highlighted its potential in various sectors including fashion, food, fuel, fertilizer, and fodder, expressing confidence that with organizations like BAIF leading the charge, cactus cultivation will emerge as a lucrative endeavor benefitting communities across the nation.

Dr. Bharat Kakade, President and Managing Trustee of BAIF, provided insights into the myriad applications of cactus beyond vegan leather production. He outlined initiatives such as utilizing cactus as fodder for animals in arid regions, biofuel production through biogas derived from cactus, liquid organic fertilizer production, and various food industry applications including cactus juice.

BAIF’s plans to promote cactus cultivation across different regions of the country were also highlighted, showcasing the organization’s commitment to leveraging this resilient plant for the socio-economic upliftment of communities.

The launch of India’s first “Pilot Cactus Park” marks a significant stride towards sustainable agriculture and economic development, positioning cactus as a “green gold” crop with immense potential to contribute to India’s growth story.
