In Memoriam: Lawyer Dara Irani Passes Away at 67

The legal community and Pune cantonment mourn the loss of Dara Irani, a prominent lawyer and former president of Poona Parsi Panchayat, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 67. His demise was attributed to multi-organ failure.

Dara Irani’s contributions extended beyond the courtroom, leaving a lasting impact on both legal matters and community welfare. Survived by his wife, two daughters, and two grandsons, Irani’s legacy encompasses his dedication to his profession and his commitment to serving his community.

Throughout his career, Irani was known for his tireless advocacy for the underprivileged and his deep involvement in matters of the cantonment. He commenced his legal practice at the Pune cantonment court, swiftly becoming the voice for the less privileged in the community. His expertise in cantonment law made him a sought-after advisor in this specialized field.

M. V. Akolkar, a close friend and fellow lawyer, reminisced about Irani’s impactful journey. “He was an expert in cantonment law matters,” Akolkar remarked. Irani’s legal endeavors transcended the cantonment boundaries, encompassing a wide range of cases in the district civil court, defense estate, Bombay High Court, and consumer courts.

Aside from his legal prowess, Irani served as the president and trustee of the Poona Parsi Panchayat from 1992 to 2010. His tenure was characterized by a commitment to community welfare and the provision of hope to those in need.

Even during his battle with cancer of the bile duct and non-alcoholic cirrhosis, Irani continued to inspire through his clarity of thought and resilience. His daughter, Sanaaya, shared that her father’s health had been declining over the past few weeks, leading to his peaceful passing at home.

Dara Irani’s legacy continues through the countless lives he touched and the legal battles he fought on behalf of the marginalized. As Pune cantonment reflects on his impactful presence, his dedication to justice and community upliftment remains an inspiration for aspiring lawyers and compassionate citizens alike.
