In-House Offenders: PMC Officials Fined for Violating Waste Burning Regulations

Pune Municipal Corporation

In a proactive move to combat pollution, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has levied fines on its own officials caught burning waste. This incident underscores the municipality’s commitment to enforcing stringent regulations imposed by the state government to curb air pollution.

The action was taken against three cleaning employees who were found burning waste over the past two days instead of following proper disposal procedures. The Hadapsar ward reported the incident, prompting the PMC’s solid waste management department to issue fines and notices to the offenders.

PMC officials have instructed all ward offices to provide strict guidelines to cleaning staff, emphasizing the prohibition of waste burning. The recent incident has been treated with severity, and the administration is closely monitoring the activities of staff members involved in waste management.

The head of PMC’s solid waste management department highlighted the increased vigilance, stating that staff members are under close scrutiny. The three employees responsible for the violation have been issued notices seeking an explanation and fined Rs 1,000 each.

This move comes in the wake of 74 instances of garbage burning in November alone, resulting in penalties imposed by the administration. Despite civic action taken against such incidents, residents in various parts of the city continue to report instances of waste burning.

To further address the issue, PMC officials announced that waste burning will be actively monitored during night patrols at sensitive locations, commencing this week. The municipality remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment for Pune’s residents.
