The Mula-Mutha River in Pune, particularly in areas like Keshav Nagar, Mundhwa, Kharadi, has become a concerning sight due to the extensive presence of hyacinth. Citizens, expressing their displeasure, have taken to social media platforms, particularly X, demanding immediate action from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
According to Nishant Mistry, an active user on X, “Miles of hyacinth. Home to billions of mosquitos. Inviting Chikungunya, Malaria, Dengue, etc. Please help the citizens of Pune. Areas impacted: Keshav Nagar, Kharadi.”
X users have actively commented on the issue, expressing their frustration and concerns about the environmental and health implications of the hyacinth invasion.
One user noted, “A 2 bhk costs over a crore which is river facing. Hyacinth facing expensive RE.”
Another user highlighted the absence of local councillors due to the lack of local elections for 3-4 years, hindering the resolution of such issues.
Mangesh Dighe, Environmental Conservation Officer at PMC, assured citizens, stating, “Already, the required machinery is deployed at the Mula Mutha river to clean the hyacinth, and most of it has been cleaned. Only some portion near Mundhwa bridge is remaining where water hyacinth will be removed in 2 to 3 days.”
Despite the PMC’s response, citizens continue to express their concerns on X, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the need for a more comprehensive solution.
