Historic Wagh Nakh Returns Home: A Landmark Exhibition in Maharashtra

The anticipation is palpable as Maharashtra prepares to welcome back a significant piece of its history — the Wagh Nakh. This legendary weapon, attributed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and infamous for its role in the demise of Bijapur general Afzal Khan in 1659, is slated to make its grand return from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Its journey home marks a pivotal moment in Maharashtra’s cultural heritage.

Journey and Display Plans

Under a memorandum of understanding inked between the Maharashtra government and the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Wagh Nakh will embark on a tour across various cities in the state over the next three years. The tour begins with an eagerly awaited exhibition at the Sri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum in Satara, scheduled to commence in early July.

The artefact will grace Satara for the initial eight months of its display, meticulously housed within a specially crafted showcase. This showcase, equipped with laminated glass, sensor technology, and CCTV monitoring, underscores the importance of security and preservation. To maintain optimal conditions, a dedicated temperature and humidity control unit has been installed, safeguarding the Wagh Nakh from environmental fluctuations.

Cultural Enrichment and Renovations

The significance of this exhibition extends beyond the Wagh Nakh itself. Alongside its display, the Satara Museum will host a complementary exhibition featuring weapons from the era of Shivaji Maharaj. This parallel exhibition promises visitors a deeper insight into the martial heritage and weaponry of that epoch, enriching their understanding of Maharashtra’s storied past.

To facilitate these exhibitions, substantial investments have been made in infrastructure and renovations. The Sri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum in Satara has been allocated funds for developing the gallery space, ensuring a fitting setting for the Wagh Nakh and its accompanying exhibits. Similarly, the Kolhapur Museum has received significant funding for its own renovations, reinforcing Maharashtra’s commitment to preserving and showcasing its cultural treasures.

Leadership and Coordination

The safe transport and meticulous handling of the Wagh Nakh during its exhibition tour are entrusted to experienced leadership. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Director General of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, will oversee these operations, ensuring that every detail is meticulously managed to honor the legacy of the artefact and the historical narrative it represents.
