Heavy Rainfall Expected in Pune Region as Southwest Monsoon Lingers

IMD Alert

The regions of Maharashtra and Pune are bracing themselves for heavy rainfall in the coming days, thanks to the delayed withdrawal of the southwest monsoon that continues to grip various parts of the country.

Anupam Kashyapi, Head of the Weather Forecasting Division, issued a statement confirming the presence of cloud cover, particularly Cumulonimbus (Cb) clouds, in the area. These clouds have brought about rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning, with varying intensity levels ranging from moderate to intense. In light of these conditions, it is strongly advised to stay informed through impact-based advisories and take necessary precautions.

The anticipated impacts of this weather event include localized flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and the potential closure of underpasses, particularly in urban zones within the aforementioned regions.

In addition to these challenges, heavy rainfall may also result in occasional reductions in visibility, potentially disrupting traffic in major cities and extending travel times for commuters.

Furthermore, the adverse weather conditions may lead to minor damage to kutcha roads and vulnerable structures. There is also a risk of localized landslides and mudslides, posing a threat to horticulture and standing crops in affected areas due to inundation. Riverine flooding in certain river catchments is another possibility that residents should remain vigilant about.

Considering these potential impacts, it is strongly recommended to check for traffic congestion on your intended route before embarking on your journey. Staying up-to-date with any traffic advisories related to this weather event is essential for safe travel.

Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid areas that are prone to waterlogging issues. Additionally, it is advisable to steer clear of vulnerable structures during the period of heavy rainfall.
