Green Oasis in the City: Pune Welcomes First-of-its-Kind Eco Terrace Garden in Wanowrie

In a groundbreaking initiative, a unique eco terrace garden was inaugurated on February 14, 2024, atop the Mahatma Phule Sanskrutik Bhavan in Wanowrie. This citizen-driven project received extensive support from the Wanawadi Ramtekdi Ward Office and health department staff, marking a collaborative effort to bring nature to the heart of the city.

Supported by Waterproof Solutions, Rotary Club of NIBM, and Rotary Club of Poona, the inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of key figures including Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner, Sewage Management Cell, PMC; Shyamala Desai, President, National Societies Clean Cities; Prasad Katkar, Deputy Municipal Corporation, PMC; Balasaheb Dhavale Patil, Assistant Commissioner, PMC; Maithili Manakwad, Founder, Wanowrie Residents Forum; Ashish Sankpal, Waterproof Solutions; Anushka Kajbaje, Environmentalist, and brand ambassadors of at least 10 Moholla Committees from Pune City and Apex committee members.

Spanning 8,000 square feet, the eco terrace garden hosts over 400 diverse saplings and showcases various zones such as an ayurvedic garden, butterfly zone, flowering plants, and a fruit garden. The garden will be open to the public from 7 am to 1 pm, providing a tranquil space for residents to connect with nature.

Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner, solid waste management, PMC, expressed the civic body’s support for the initiative. He pledged to install a high mast and a green net to shield the area from harsh sunlight, emphasizing the collaboration between residents and PMC in realizing this green endeavor.

Shyamala Desai of National Societies for Clean Cities applauded the collaborative effort, highlighting the significance of citizens and PMC working together for a cleaner and greener Pune. The Wanowrie eco terrace garden marks the 10th such initiative in the city.

Maithili Manakwad, from Wanowrie Residents Forum, emphasized the garden’s alignment with the principles of Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle, showcasing how waste products can be effectively utilized to enhance the surroundings.

Anushka Kajbaje, the environmentalist, urged garden and nature enthusiasts to visit the site, revealing the diverse range of saplings present.

Ashish Sankpal, representing Waterproof Solutions, explained that the garden was established following waterproofing measures. He encouraged citizens to visit the location and consider implementing similar concepts on their terraces for effective waste composting.
