Ganesh Festival Noise Levels in Pune’s Mandai Area Reach Alarming 97.3 Decibels, Says MPCB Data

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has unveiled data that sheds light on the disregard for noise level regulations during the ongoing Ganesh festival in Pune. Officials conducted noise level monitoring at 18 key locations across the city on September 19 and 20, and the results have brought to the forefront a concerning trend: noise pollution levels are soaring. Notably, Mandai area has been identified as a major hotspot, recording a staggering 97.3 decibels of noise on September 19 alone.

Ganesh Festival Disregards Noise Regulations

The findings have raised red flags among authorities and environmentalists alike. As per MPCB regulations, the permissible noise level during daylight hours is capped at 55 decibels. However, Mandai area’s reading, nearly double this threshold, underscores the pressing need for stricter adherence to noise pollution rules during festive celebrations.

Comprehensive Monitoring Effort

To address this growing concern, the MPCB is conducting a thorough five-day noise level monitoring initiative throughout the festival. The selected monitoring dates include September 19, 20, 22, 25, and 28, with 18 pivotal locations earmarked for scrutiny within Pune. Beyond the city limits, similar monitoring endeavors are underway in various parts of Maharashtra. In total, 132 locations have been identified across the state for noise level assessments, with Mumbai topping the list at 25 locations, followed closely by Pune with 18.

The MPCB is committed to curbing the escalating noise pollution menace and ensuring that citizens can enjoy festivities without compromising their well-being. As the festival season unfolds, authorities are poised to take stringent action against those flouting noise regulations to protect the auditory health and quality of life of Pune’s residents.
