    From War Wounds to Victory Stands: Murlikant Petkar’s Enduring Legacy

    Honoring a Paralympic Pioneer: Commemoration Ceremony on 51st Anniversary of Padma Shri Murlikant Petkar's Historic Gold Medal


    On December 3, 2023, World Disability Day, the Sport Climbing Association of Maharashtra paid tribute to a pivotal moment in Indian sports history at Raaga Palace, Pune. The event commemorated the 51st anniversary of Shri Murlikant Rajaram Petkar, a retired Craftsman and Padma Shri Awardee, securing India’s inaugural Paralympic Gold Medal at the 1972 Heidelberg Paralympics.

    Lieutenant General Ajai Kumar Singh, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Yudh Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Command, graced the felicitation event. Distinguished personalities from Maharashtra, including Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awardees, Arjuna Awardees, and Shiv Chhatrapati Awardees, were also in attendance.

    The ceremony shed light on Shri Petkar’s remarkable journey, transcending from the wrestling arenas of rural Maharashtra to international sports acclaim. Overcoming severe injuries sustained during the 1965 Indo-Pak War, Petkar’s indomitable spirit propelled him to a historic victory in swimming at the 1972 Summer Paralympics. His illustrious career boasts 12 International Golds, 34 National Golds, and 40 State Golds, placing him among the pantheon of sports legends.

    Lt Gen Ajai Kumar Singh commenced the ceremony with the traditional Deep Prajwalan, followed by a puja of the original medal and the distribution of ten Gold Medal replicas. The event was elevated by a heartfelt tribute from the Army Commander, extolling Shri Petkar as a titan of dedication, resilience, and unparalleled achievement. The ceremony concluded with a Vote of thanks by Brig M P Yadav, VSM (Retd), sharing tales of valor and triumph, captivating the audience with Shri Petkar’s life story.

    The inspirational saga of resilience and triumph is set to reach a broader audience through the upcoming film ‘Chandu Champion,’ starring Kartik Aaryan. The film portrays Shri Petkar’s monumental achievements and his inspiring journey, adding a cinematic dimension to his significant contribution to Indian sports history.
