From Pimpri Chinchwad to Paris: Suraj Munde’s Inspiring Cycling Journey

Suraj Munde, a resident of Pimpri Chinchwad, has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully qualifying for the challenging ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023’ cycling competition.

Known as one of the world’s toughest cycling events, this year’s edition featured around 290 cyclists from India. Munde earned his spot in the ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023’ after showcasing his skills and determination in the pre-qualification and qualifying rounds.

In his debut attempt, Munde fulfilled his dream of becoming a cyclist by completing the grueling 1219 km race in 90 hours, 03 minutes, and 50 seconds. Throughout the competition, he faced a myriad of challenges, including mountains, valleys, gorges, constant elevation changes, and extreme weather conditions like cold, heat, wind, and rain. He also exhibited discipline in managing his diet and sleep.

Every four years, the Audax Club Parisian in France hosts ‘Paris-Brest-Paris,’ a world-class extreme cycling race covering 1200 km. Drawing participants from around the world, this competition attracts approximately 8000 contestants. The ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023’ race offers three challenging divisions, requiring cyclists to complete the demanding course in either 80, 84, or 90 hours.

To qualify for ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023,’ cyclists must conquer a series of demanding events spanning distances of 1200, 1000, 600, 400, 300, and 200 km in India one year prior. In addition to these qualifying races, athletes must maintain rigorous training regimens, preparing themselves to face a variety of adversities, including scorching heat, gusty winds, drenching rain, sweltering temperatures, frigid cold, and unpredictable weather fluctuations, all while carefully managing their diet and sleep patterns.

Munde attributes his success to the invaluable support of his mentor, Ashish Joshi, who selflessly trained, guided, and motivated him throughout his journey. He also acknowledges the pivotal role played by his wife, Swati, and sons, Swaraj and Rajat, who provided spontaneous assistance in various ways, propelling him toward the finish line.

Additionally, he expresses gratitude to his cycling friends who extended their helping hand along the way.
