Feeding Stray Dogs Leads to Confrontation: Pune Rural Police Officer Under Scrutiny

A heated confrontation unfolded in Dhayari’s Chandrama Society, DSK Vishwa, as a dispute over feeding stray dogs resulted in the registration of a case against Mohini Paithankar/Kulkarni, a local police officer. The officer is accused of assaulting Manisha Pawar, a dedicated animal welfare activist, and attempting to obstruct her from providing sustenance to the neighborhood’s stray dogs.

The incident drew the attention of former minister and renowned animal activist Maneka Gandhi, who promptly reached out to senior police officials, urging an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter.

Manisha Pawar has been actively involved in feeding stray dogs across various areas of Pune. Her compassionate efforts aim to prevent accidents and protect innocent lives by ensuring that these animals are adequately fed.

In her official complaint, Manisha alleges that Mohini Paithankar/Kulkarni physically assaulted her and even attempted to strangle her while she was carrying out her routine food distribution for the stray dogs. The complaint was formally lodged at the Haveli Police Station and invokes sections 323, 506, and 427 of the Indian Penal Code, pertaining to causing harm, criminal intimidation, and property damage, respectively.

Sachin Wangde, the Police Inspector at Haveli Police Station, affirmed, “Senior officials have been apprised of the incident, and a comprehensive report has been submitted to the Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural). Further actions will be pursued as per the directives of higher authorities.”
