Equal Opportunity Centre: District collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh warns of action against erring colleges

PUNE: It is necessary to set up an Equal Opportunity Centre in colleges to provide guidance to students about higher education and employment opportunities. However, almost all colleges have failed on this front.

Till date, 1,192 colleges have not set up such a centre and the district collector has issued orders about taking suitable action. The registrar of SPPU has received a letter regarding this and he has issued instructions to the colleges.

It is necessary to set up an Equal Opportunity Centre in each college due to the New Education Policy and different educational opportunities. The Social Welfare Department had issued orders in January 2022 but it has come to notice that a maximum number of colleges have not set up such a centre. Finally, District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh has sent a letter to the university about taking action.

Science, arts, commerce, agriculture, medical, engineering and technical colleges in the district have not set up such a centre. The registrar of SPPU has asked the colleges to set up a centre as per the norms but has not specified the deadline.

Equal Opportunity Centre

The Social Welfare Department has issued instructions that a centre should be set up in the colleges to solve problems of backward class students and other students. A committee should be set up under the chairmanship of the principal and division heads should be members.

Opportunities in higher education
Entrepreneurial sectors and opportunities
Guidance about training and research
Women’s study centre and career kata
Competitive exams and skill development centre

The letter sent by District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh states, “The Equal Opportunity Centre could not be set up due to carelessness of colleges in the district. Hence, students don’t get the benefits on time and this is a cause for concern. If a college does not set up such a centre, its affiliation will be cancelled.”
