The Election Commission of India has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative with the introduction of the ‘Saksham’ app, aimed at revolutionizing the voting experience for elderly and disabled citizens across the nation.
Dr. Suhas Diwase, the Collector and District Election Officer, announced the launch of the ‘Saksham’ app, emphasizing its significance in ensuring inclusivity and accessibility in the electoral process. Particularly catering to individuals aged 85 and above and those with disabilities exceeding 40%, the app offers a plethora of features to streamline the voting procedure.
With the ‘Saksham’ app, eligible voters can avail themselves of various services, ranging from voter registration and transfer to requesting changes in polling stations and lodging complaints. The app also provides essential information such as polling station details, booth locator status, and accessibility features.
To further accommodate disabled voters, polling stations have been equipped with specialized facilities, including ground floor locations, wheelchair assistance, accessible toilets, and ramps. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) now feature Braille and vote book facilities, catering to the needs of visually impaired and physically challenged voters.
The eligibility criteria for enrollment encompass a wide array of disabilities, ensuring that individuals with diverse needs are included in the electoral process. From blindness and deafness to physical disabilities and neurological disorders, the ‘Saksham’ app strives to be a comprehensive solution for all citizens.
