Every Dussehra, the Market Yard in Pune brims with the vibrant hues of marigold flowers, a symbol of the festive spirit. However, this year, the market witnessed an unprecedented influx of marigold blooms, setting a record for the occasion. Despite high hopes and bright blossoms, these marigolds were sold at bargain prices ranging from Rs 5 to 10 per kilogram during the festival, leaving farmers in despair and compelling them to discard the flowers on the road.
Dussehra Demand Fails to Meet Marigold Supply
Dussehra traditionally sparks a surge in demand for various flowers, including marigolds. However, this year saw a notable increase in flower production, resulting in a substantial oversupply. Farmers, eager to profit from the festive season, brought significant quantities of marigolds to the market. Regrettably, the surplus marigolds were left unsold, leading to an unfortunate waste as they were discarded on the streets.
The marigold flowers, transported to the Market Yard from regions like Pune, Solapur, Kolhapur, Hingoli, Beed, and Osmanabad, initially fetched prices between Rs 20 and 25 per kilogram on Monday. However, the situation took a downturn as the price plummeted to Rs 5-10 per kilogram by Tuesday. Trader Sagar Bhosale noted that the market was flooded with marigolds, making it challenging to sell them.
Farmer’s Despair in Oversupply
Arun Veer, the President of the Akhil Phulbazar Adte Association, highlighted the challenges faced by farmers this year. The oversupply of marigolds meant that farmers couldn’t secure the desired prices for their blooms. Faced with this predicament, farmers had no choice but to discard the flowers and return empty-handed.
