Drone Ban Ensured for Pune’s Palkhi Processions Amid Security Concerns

Ashadhi Wari 2024

In a move to enhance security measures during the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi Sohala, the Pune Police have imposed a ban on the private use of drone cameras for filming. The announcement, made by Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar on June 29, mandates that individuals obtain prior police permission to operate drones for filming purposes.

Security Concerns Prompt Ban

The decision to prohibit drone filming without authorization stems from concerns over potential misuse and security risks associated with the revered Palkhi processions. These annual events, marking the 193rd edition this year, hold cultural and religious significance, drawing large crowds and requiring stringent security measures.

Route and Event Details

Scheduled for arrival in Pune on June 30, Sant Tukaram Maharaj’s Palkhi will enter from Pimpri Chinchwad in the afternoon. Both Palkhis will converge at Patil Estate before proceeding along a designated route that includes prominent chowks and temples across Pune city.

Permission Procedure

Individuals wishing to film using drones must submit applications for permission at their local police station. The police will review each application to determine whether approval can be granted. This regulatory measure aims to prevent unauthorized drone use during the processions, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and legal guidelines.

Commissioner Kumar emphasized that unauthorized drone filming will result in legal consequences due to the potential for misuse and disruption of public safety measures. The ban on private drone filming will remain in effect until July 3, coinciding with the duration of the Palkhi processions.

Traffic and Public Safety Adjustments

As part of the preparations, traffic arrangements in Nana Peth and Bhavani Peth areas will be adjusted to accommodate the halting points of Sant Tukaram Maharaj’s Palkhi at Shri Nivdunga Vitthal Temple and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj’s Palkhi at Shri Palkhi Vitthal Temple, respectively. These adjustments aim to ensure smooth passage and safety for participants and spectators alike.

As Pune gears up to host these historic Palkhi processions, the implementation of drone filming regulations underscores the commitment to safeguarding public events while preserving cultural traditions and religious practices.
