Driving Accountability: Pune RTO’s Initiative to Tackle Auto Rickshaw Infractions

In a bid to address the burgeoning concerns of commuters grappling with issues related to auto rickshaw rides, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is set to launch a dedicated WhatsApp helpline number commencing June 1. This initiative aims to provide a seamless avenue for commuters to report grievances and seek redressal for any problems encountered while hailing auto rickshaws.

According to a senior RTO official, the decision to implement this quick redressal system stems from the escalating number of complaints lodged by passengers regarding various infractions committed by auto rickshaw drivers. These grievances encompass a spectrum of issues, ranging from refusals to ply to instances of misconduct towards passengers.

Statistics gleaned from RTO records paint a vivid picture of the challenges faced by commuters on a daily basis. On average, five complaints are lodged against auto rickshaw drivers with the Pune RTO every day, highlighting the pervasive nature of the problem. Instances of rule violations such as refusal to commute, overcharging, and tampering with speedometers have become alarmingly commonplace.

During enforcement operations conducted by Pune RTO last year, frequent encounters with recalcitrant auto rickshaw drivers underscored the urgent need for intervention. Complaints ranging from refusals to ply to overcharging and tampered meters were recurrent themes, indicative of systemic issues plaguing the sector.

Data furnished by the RTO further reveals the gravity of the situation, with nearly 90 complaints registered against auto drivers in Pune between April and December 2023 for refusing rides. Additionally, 72 cases of meter tampering and approximately 60 instances of fare overcharging were documented during the same period.

Instances of rude and impolite behavior exhibited by drivers have also been flagged by RTO officials, prompting disciplinary action against 57 offenders. Furthermore, a staggering 1,324 cases fell under various other categories, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the challenges encountered by commuters.
