Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, has addressed concerns surrounding the government’s decision to temporarily fill certain job posts on a contractual basis. Pawar emphasized that the state government’s move is not indicative of a broader shift toward privatization of government jobs, as some opposition parties have suggested. Instead, he underscored that the decision to resort to contracts for job appointments is a short-term measure aimed at ensuring the continued functioning of essential government services.
Government’s Recruitment Plans:
During a media interaction on Friday, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar refuted claims that the government was promoting privatization of government jobs and expressed frustration over being unjustly criticized. He clarified that the government is actively in the process of recruiting approximately 1.5 lakh candidates across various departments.
Opposition Accusations:
Pawar’s remarks coincided with a protest by several Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) aspirants in front of the district collectorate. They were joined by members of the Aam Aadmi Party, who staged their own demonstration in Navi Peth. The issue had also drawn criticism from NCP Working President Supriya Sule a day earlier.
Political Double Standards:
Deputy CM Pawar accused the opposition of adopting double standards on the matter. He pointed out that the decision to employ contractual appointments for certain posts had been made by the previous government. However, he noted that now that they are no longer in power, they are attempting to shift responsibility onto the current administration.
Temporary Measures for Essential Services:
Ajit Pawar clarified that the government’s objective is to prevent any disruptions in critical public services. Departments such as health and education cannot afford to leave posts vacant for extended periods. Therefore, the government is implementing temporary contracts to ensure that services are uninterrupted. Pawar further stated that once regular recruitment processes are completed, these contractual appointments will be discontinued.
