Dengue Surge Prompts Pune and PCMC, Among Others, to Appoint ‘Breeding Site Checkers’

As Maharashtra grapples with a recent increase in dengue cases, health authorities are taking proactive measures to curb the spread of the disease. Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, along with ten other municipal corporations in the state, have been directed to appoint ‘Breeding Site Checkers’ to inspect households and target breeding sites of disease-carrying mosquitoes. This initiative aims to mitigate the rise in dengue cases by identifying and eliminating potential breeding grounds.

Dengue Cases on the Rise: In recent days, the state health department has observed a notable surge in the number of dengue cases. While the situation is not yet deemed alarming, health officials are ramping up surveillance activities in the affected districts. The state government is taking proactive steps to contain the spread of dengue and prevent further escalation.

Appointment of ‘Breeding Site Checkers’: To combat the growing concern, the state health department has issued a directive to 12 municipal corporations in Maharashtra. These corporations, including Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, are instructed to appoint ‘Breeding Site Checkers.’ These individuals will be tasked with inspecting households within their respective jurisdictions to identify and eradicate potential mosquito breeding sites.

Municipal Corporations Involved: The list of municipal corporations involved in this effort includes Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Nashik, Solapur, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Kalyan, Dhule, Amravati, and Chandrapur. Each of these corporations is required to appoint 25 ‘Breeding Site Checkers.’ Their collective responsibility will be to inspect approximately 200 houses daily within the municipal corporation’s boundaries to identify and rectify breeding sites.

Enhancing Surveillance Efforts: The appointment of ‘Breeding Site Checkers’ is an additional measure to reinforce the ongoing efforts of health officials in the state. Authorities are already conducting container surveys to identify potential mosquito breeding sites. The introduction of ‘Breeding Site Checkers’ aims to provide a more targeted approach, ensuring that households are free from conditions conducive to mosquito breeding.

Dengue Cases Snapshot: Official data reveals that between January and July of this year, a total of 26,470 fever cases were reported, with 3,164 of these cases confirmed as dengue infections. Notably, Mumbai has reported the highest number of cases, with 1,115 cases reported within the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation limits. Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have reported 33 and 30 cases, respectively.

The proactive step taken by the state health department to appoint ‘Breeding Site Checkers’ is a vital strategy to control the dengue outbreak. By targeting and eliminating mosquito breeding sites, these efforts aim to reduce the number of cases and minimize the impact of the disease on communities. The collaboration between health authorities, municipal corporations, and the public is crucial in curbing the spread of dengue and maintaining public health.
