Decoding the Tale of Chandni Chowk: Ajit Pawar Unveils the Enigma Behind NDA Chowk’s Name

The inauguration of the Chandani Chowk Flyover was not only a significant infrastructural event but also an occasion that prompted Ajit Pawar to delve into the captivating history that bestowed the name “Chandni Chowk” upon Pune’s iconic bridge. Officially recognized as NDA Chowk, the bridge has gained local fame under the moniker Chandni Chowk, weaving a narrative that has intrigued the city’s residents for years. Amid discussions about traffic congestion and the bridge’s role as a central point, the question lingers: What is the origin of the name Chandni Chowk? Ajit Pawar shed light on this mystery during a recent Bhar program.

Unveiling the Origins of Chandni Chowk’s Name

Ajit Pawar revealed that while the square near the Municipal Office is officially designated as NDA Chowk, the name Chandni Chowk has entrenched itself in the local lexicon. According to local folklore, a moonstone embedded in the bridge’s stone led to the association with the name Chandni Chowk. Alternatively, some attribute the name to the convergence of multiple roads at this junction, resulting in a complex network of streets reminiscent of Delhi’s renowned Chandni Chowk.

The Courageous Spirit of Punekars

Beyond the intriguing name of Chandni Chowk, Ajit Pawar celebrated the unique predilection of Punekars for creative nomenclature. Known globally, Punekari patyas (witty slogans) have secured a national platform for discussion. Even religious nomenclature isn’t exempt from their inventive spirit. Pune’s deities are christened with distinctive names that reflect this bold attitude. Names like Kathung Vithoba, Pasodya Vithoba, Jilbya Maroti, Modi Ganapati, Khunya Maroti, Dadhiwala Dutt, Sotya Mhasoba, Upashi Vithoba, Gudge Modi Mata, Bajirao Mandir, Mati Ganapati, Guchup Ganapati, Gundacha Ganapati, and Khunya Muralidhar embellish Pune’s spiritual landscape. Pawar lauded the creativity of Pune’s residents, acknowledging their limitless inventiveness and unabashed penchant for distinctive naming conventions.
