In a concerted effort to combat electricity theft and curb distribution and commercial losses, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) conducted an intensive anti-power theft campaign in West Maharashtra. The campaign, which spanned Pune, Solapur, Satara, Kolhapur, and Sangli districts under the Pune regional division, resulted in the detection of unauthorized electricity consumption amounting to a staggering Rs 1 crore 59 lakh in a single day.

Under the guidance of MSEDCL Pune Regional Director Ankush Nale, the campaign targeted various categories of electricity connections, including domestic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural. A total of 1276 places were inspected, revealing instances of direct theft by hooking electricity wires or tampering with meters, totaling Rs. 96 lakh 58 thousand, in 869 locations.

District-wise Breakdown:

  • Pune District: 653 cases (Rs 1 crore 21 lakh 84 thousand)
  • Satara District: 151 cases (Rs 12 lakh 34 thousand)
  • Solapur District: 170 cases (Rs 8 lakh 29 thousand)
  • Kolhapur District: 134 cases (Rs 7 lakh 3 thousand)
  • Sangli District: 168 cases (Rs 9 lakh 61 thousand)

Those found involved in electricity theft and unauthorized use are being issued fines and new electricity bills. MSEDCL has urged immediate payment of these bills, cautioning that non-compliance will result in appropriate action in accordance with the rules. Emphasizing the risks associated with electricity theft, the company encourages individuals to obtain official electricity connections for a safe and legal supply.

The Electricity Act, 2003, under Section 135, prescribes fines and imprisonment of up to three years for the offense of electricity theft. Simultaneously, MSEDCL is actively cutting off power supply to locations with outstanding electricity bills, taking stringent action against electricity theft offenders.
