Countdown to Convenience: Pune Metro Eyes Pre-Ganeshotsav Launch to Swargate

The Pune Metro is gearing up to extend its services to Swargate ahead of Ganeshotsav, with substantial progress already achieved on the underground metro line from District Court (Shivajinagar) to Swargate. Mahametro, the implementing agency, aims to complete 95 percent of the remaining work by the end of July, anticipating the upcoming assembly election code of conduct in September.

Progress and Timeline

“At present, we are working towards launching the metro service on this route before Ganeshotsav,” stated Atul Gadgil, Director of Mahametro. “The metro line from District Court to Swargate is 95 percent complete and is scheduled to be finished by the end of July.”

The 3.64-kilometer route from District Court to Swargate includes crucial stops at Budhwar Peth, Mandai, and Swargate stations. A notable milestone is the underground passage beneath the Mutha riverbed between District Court Station and Budhwar Peth Station, a first in Pune’s metro history. Successful testing of this section was conducted in February, marking significant progress in the project’s timeline.

Final Stages and Approval Process

Following the completion of construction, the Metro Railway Safety Commissioner will conduct a thorough inspection of the route. Upon receiving final approval, Mahametro will submit a proposal to the state government to commence metro services on this line. Project insiders suggest that service operations could potentially begin as early as September, barring any delays related to the election code of conduct.

Benefits for Commuters

The introduction of the new metro line is poised to benefit devotees and commuters in Pune’s central areas, particularly during Ganeshotsav. The central Peth area, renowned for its revered Ganesha temples, typically experiences heavy vehicular congestion during festive times. The metro service promises a convenient and efficient alternative, significantly easing travel for thousands of devotees and residents alike.
