Conjunctivitis Outbreak Hits Rural Parts of Pune District: 9,098 Cases Reported So Far

Pune, 3rd August 2023: Pune district is facing a significant outbreak of Conjunctivitis, with official data revealing that the rural areas are reporting higher cases. On Wednesday, a total of 1,090 new cases were reported in the rural parts, bringing the total number of cases in these areas to 9,098.

According to the official report, the Pune district has witnessed a total of 13,998 Conjunctivitis cases so far, including 1,052 cases from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits, 3,047 from Pimpri Chinchwad (PCMC), and 9,898 from rural areas. Fortunately, 8,517 of these patients have already recovered.

On Wednesday alone, the district reported 2,495 new cases, with 811 cases from PMC, 594 from PCMC, and 1,090 cases from Pune Rural. In response to the rising cases, the administration has initiated house-to-house and school surveys to identify and monitor the affected individuals. So far, a total of 3,085 schools have been inspected in rural areas, and 2,896 houses have been surveyed.

Among the rural blocks, Khed is the most affected, with 7,823 reported cases so far.

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is a highly contagious eye infection that causes redness and inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin clear tissue that lines the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids.
