Closing the Gap: Maha Metro and PMPML Explore Solutions for Pune Airport Connectivity

Pune’s Maha Metro and PMPML are teaming up to tackle a significant connectivity challenge in the city: the 2-kilometer gap between the Ramwadi metro station and Lohegaon airport.

Bridging the Distance

The primary issue at hand is how to establish a seamless connection between the Ramwadi metro station and the bustling Lohegaon airport, which are separated by a mere 2 kilometers. Currently, passengers traveling via the metro to the Ramwadi station face the challenge of reaching the airport without a direct link.

An official from Maha Metro clarified that while there is no immediate proposal to extend the Metro line to the airport, they are actively exploring alternatives. The focus is on providing a dedicated feeder bus service for passengers heading to the airport.

Streamlined Connectivity

The proposed plan aims to synchronize bus schedules with flight operations, ensuring that passengers can conveniently board buses to the airport upon disembarking at the Ramwadi station. Furthermore, Maha Metro is considering allocating dedicated space at the Ramwadi station for PMPML bus pickups and drop-offs, further streamlining the process.

Anticipating Passenger Volumes

The anticipation of increased foot traffic extends beyond Ramwadi. Stations at Kalyaninagar and Yerawada are also expected to witness high passenger volumes due to their proximity to IT hubs and residential areas.

Progress on the construction of these four stations is currently at 80%, and officials are optimistic about completing the project by December. Safety inspections conducted by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) are also expected to conclude by year-end.

Local residents and commuters have expressed excitement about this extension. One resident mentioned how the Metro’s reach to Yerawada would simplify their commute to their Airport Road office. Another commuter emphasized the need for the Metro service to commence promptly, especially for those working in the Yerawada and Kalyaninagar areas. They added that connecting the outskirts to the central city via the Metro is crucial for enhancing overall connectivity.
