Clear Skies, Hazy Vision: Pune’s Battle Against Air Pollution-Related Eye Issues

As the air quality in Pune deteriorates due to rising pollution levels, ophthalmologists have reported a surge in cases of allergic conjunctivitis. The overall air quality index (AQI) has exceeded 100, signaling a decline in the city’s air quality and raising concerns about public health.

Pune is currently grappling with a moderate level of air pollution, with an AQI of 125, as reported by monitoring data from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). This increase in pollution is attributed to a layer of white smog, which results from a combination of smoke, fog, and dust. SAFAR-IITM data reveals that the AQI has risen from a satisfactory level of 57 on October 1 to the current moderate level.

The highest AQI was recorded on October 18, reaching 143. During both the early morning and evening, a visible layer of smog blankets the city, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of winter fog. However, individuals who are routinely exposed to this smog during activities like morning exercise or commuting are reporting discomfort, along with eye inflammation.
