The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is contemplating the demolition of one of the pillars installed for the Sinhagad Road flyover due to design flaws and concerns about the quality of materials used. Following a recent inspection that revealed issues in the construction, the civic body is considering whether to refurbish or completely demolish the problematic pillar.
A senior PMC official stated, “It appears that the pillar may have some issues pertaining to the design and the quality of material used. The decision about whether to demolish or refurbish it would be taken based on the extent of damage it might cause.”
Confirming the situation, additional municipal commissioner Vikas Dhakane noted, “We are cross-verifying the work for the safety and the security of the project.” The civic administration is keen on ensuring the safety of the flyover and commuters who will use it once completed.
Activists have expressed concern over the design flaws and poor-quality workmanship that could potentially lead to severe damage to the flyover and pose a threat to commuters’ lives. They emphasized the importance of accountability and urged the civic administration to take strict action against officials and contractors responsible for any lapses in the project.
The Sinhagad Road flyover project aims to provide much-needed relief to commuters by easing traffic congestion in the area. The flyover is intended to stretch from Rajaram bridge to Fun Time theatre in Wadgaon. Residents have emphasized the urgency of timely execution, as the region is currently plagued by traffic jams and congestion. The project’s completion is scheduled for 2025.
Earlier this month, work on the flyover was temporarily suspended near Santosh hall due to technical issues. The problems were subsequently resolved, and construction has resumed under the supervision of the PMC.
