Chitale Bandhu Breaks Tradition: Keeps Shop Open During Afternoon Hours, Delighting Punekars

In a surprising move, Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale, a renowned sweet shop in Pune, has decided to defy tradition by keeping its doors open during the afternoon hours, contrary to the long-standing practice of closing for siesta. This decision marks a significant departure from Pune’s cultural norms and is expected to become a new chapter in the city’s folklore.

Historically, Pune has been associated with the tradition of shopkeepers taking afternoon breaks, with the hours between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM reserved for rest. P L Deshpande, a celebrated writer from Maharashtra, once humorously remarked that even Pune’s beloved deity, Dagdusheth Ganpati, would be turned away if he visited the Chitale shop during these hours, being asked to return after the siesta.

However, Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale has now announced its decision to keep its shop open seven days a week, from 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM, effectively putting an end to this age-old tradition. This move has garnered attention from both locals and outsiders, sparking conversations and reflections on Pune’s evolving culture.

Reacting to the news, social media users have expressed a mix of amusement and nostalgia. Some have remarked on the cultural significance of the siesta tradition, while others have embraced the change as a sign of Pune’s modernization. Nonetheless, the decision by Chitale Bandhu has sparked discussions about the evolving identity of Pune and its cherished traditions.
