Charging Ahead: PMPML’s Green Initiative with Adani to Reshape Pune’s EV Landscape

Pune – Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has entered into a groundbreaking partnership with the Adani Group to establish private electric vehicle charging stations at strategic locations in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. This innovative move aims to not only encourage the adoption of electric vehicles but also diversify revenue streams for PMPML amid operational challenges.

The selected locations, including Hinjawadi Phase Two, Bhakti-Shakti (Nigdi), Bhosari, Katraj, Baner-Sus Road, Pulgate, and Deccan Gymkhana, were strategically chosen to cater to the growing demand for convenient charging facilities in key areas. The Adani Group will be responsible for the construction and operation of these charging stations, with the initial phase already underway at Hinjawadi Phase Two.

As part of the agreement, PMPML is set to receive 32.5 per cent of the income generated from these charging stations. This revenue-sharing model signifies a step towards sustainability and financial viability for the public transport authority, which faces an operating deficit due to escalating operational costs.

The charging stations will provide round-the-clock services, accommodating electric two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and three-wheelers. To enhance user experience, PMPML and Adani Group will introduce a dedicated mobile app, offering seamless access and payment options for charging services. This initiative aligns with the larger goal of promoting eco-friendly transportation and reducing the carbon footprint in the region.

PMPML, responsible for operating public bus services with a fleet of 1750 buses and serving 11 to 12 lakh passengers daily, generates an average daily income of nearly Rs 1.6 crore. With increasing operational costs, the organization is embracing innovative approaches like private charging stations to address its operating deficit and ensure sustainable growth.
