Bhimashankar’s Ecotourism Boost: Mahadev Van Nature Information Centre Unveiled

A new milestone in ecotourism has been achieved with the inauguration of the ‘Mahadev Van Nature Information Centre’ at Bhimashankar on March 8. Positioned as an essential hub for both tourists and pilgrims, the centre, established by the wildlife wing of the Pune Forest Department, offers a digital repository of information on the rich biodiversity found in the Western Ghats.

Tushar Chavan, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) at the Pune Forest Department, explained, “The Mahadev Van Nature Information Centre is a crucial part of the ecotourism project initiated in 2016. Visitors to the Bhimashankar sanctuary can now access comprehensive details about indigenous and medicinal plants, diverse wildlife, and the overall biodiversity in the Western Ghats. The centre premises have also been adorned with various plant species, contributing to the natural ambiance.”

Chavan highlighted the modern approach to disseminating information, stating, “All details will be available in digital format, and we have incorporated multiple digital display machines for this purpose. In addition to biodiversity insights, the centre will also feature information about the 12 jyotirlingas in India.”

Bhimashankar is home to one of the 12 jyotirlingas, a significant pilgrimage destination situated in the Ambegaon tehsil. The Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary, covering an expansive 131 square kilometers and nestled within the Western Ghats, attracts over 1,000 tourists annually. Recognizing its dual importance as a natural and religious site, the forest department initiated an ecotourism project to enhance visitor experience while promoting environmental awareness.

The Mahadev Van Nature Information Centre stands as a testament to this initiative, offering a holistic experience that blends information on biodiversity with spiritual significance, enriching the tourism potential of the Bhimashankar sanctuary.
