Beyond Blueprints: The Countdown to Pune’s New Airport Terminal Opening

The much-anticipated inauguration of Pune’s New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) is still pending, even though its construction was completed over three months ago. Originally slated for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2023, the terminal is ready for operations, but an official announcement is pending.

An Airport Authority of India (AAI) official confirmed that the NITB’s work is finished, including successful trial runs. However, the delay in receiving inauguration dates from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has kept the terminal idle. Hopes are high for an official opening and commencement of operations by the end of this month.

The NITB, with its 50,000 square meters of built-up area, boasts 72 check-in counters and 10 aerobridges. It will connect to the existing terminal through three aerobridges, enhancing overall airport infrastructure.

The expansion project for Pune airport, with an estimated cost of Rs 2475 crore, includes the construction of the new terminal building, a multi-level parking structure (Rs 120 crore), and a new cargo complex (approximately Rs 2300 crore). The urgency for a larger terminal became evident with missed deadlines, increased flight operations, and the addition of new destinations.

Situated on the east side of the current terminal building, the new terminal will contribute to the airport’s total size of 74,300 square meters, a significant upgrade from the existing 22,300 square meters.

As the city eagerly awaits the official launch of the new terminal, its completion marks a crucial step in Pune airport’s expansion, catering to the growing needs of air travelers and further connecting the city to various destinations.
